How to Start a Yard Cleaning Business
Yard maintenance and cleaning is something that most people neglect to do either because they don’t have the time or they don’t have the resources. This is where your child comes in. If they don’t mind working outdoors they can make money with a yard cleaning business.
Do your homework. If the neighbors have a lot of trees, then there will be leaves in the fall. If the yards are a good size, then there will be a lot of grass to mow. The more that your child is willing to do, the more popular their services will be.
Let them determine what yard services they want to offer. Create a flyer to hand out door-to-door. The flyer should advertise the services that they plan to offer and the price ranges for each. Make sure they include their name, address, and phone number.
I would advise against handing out flyers to more than three or four neighborhoods. The workload shouldn’t get beyond what the kids can handle. If you are willing to invest the time to help them out, then you could open the business up to a larger area. You may want to open up a bank account in your name and your child’s name to keep an accurate accounting of the money earned from the yard cleaning business.
Your child will need some tools. If your family can afford it, you may want to purchase a push mower just for the yard care business. Depending on the number of clients, the wear and tear on your personal mower may be too much. Make sure that they have a rake or two for leaves and work gloves to avoid cuts from branches and things like that.
You will be instrumental in getting the yard cleaning business off the ground. A child won’t be able to haul their equipment where they need to go without help. They will depend on you for transportation. To increase their confidence, make sure that you stay in the background while they are performing their service. Follow their lead when it comes to what you should do when helping out.
Staying organized will be the key. Keep an appointment book handy so your child can record when they are supposed to clean which yards. They should only accept jobs within the neighborhood through the week during school because the distance is short. On the weekends and during the summer months, they will have more flexibility and longer work hours if they wish.
Yards need cleaning during every season of the year. There will always be work to be done. Your older child or teen will enjoy year long demands for their services.
